Horton Hears a Review (so lame, noted)

By Jessica Steaffens

Life lessons, fanciful pictures, and mostly-simple comedy. Horton Hears a Who is a who-tacular effort to attempt the genius of Dr. Suess. Its who-ventures and who-alogue remind us that “just because you put ‘who’ in front of a word, doesn’t make it cute.”

One might think that an animation film starring Jim Carrey, Steve Carrell and Will Arnett could be a total disaster (too many cooks spoiling the broth in attempts to “make ’em laugh”). But these oft-overused actors bring their characters together with great timing and restraint, so that Suess’ story is handled beautifully and given fresh life. It is thankfully limited in its “contemporary” jokes that make us cringe as Hollywood-iots attempt to make a timeless classic “fit in.” The beautiful animation works well. Though CGI, it looks and feels Suessian in its execution, as if the movie has literally jumped off the pages of his book. All that to say, it is time to gather your younger siblings/cousins/neighbors together to watch and learn Suess’ moral that “a person’s a person no matter how small.”

Horton will be heading to DVD shortly.

Oh and hey kids, if you’re bored at work or if you just like to fool around with fun-awesome-great-gadgets….try this on for size:
