Past Due for a Passport

This week I am finally turning in my application for a passport. The only place out of the country I have ever been was Costa Rica, but that was pre-9/11 when passports weren’t required to travel there. Anywho, inspired by my soon-to-be international roaming capabilities, I got to thinking of where I would want to travel to. Here’s the short list I wrote down on a napkin during my morning creative meeting:

  • Peru
  • Kenya (ala African safari)
  • South Africa (ala same as above)
  • Greece
  • Italy
  • London
  • Spain
  • Paris
  • Tahiti
  • Bora Bora

So I guess I’ll get started on planning one of the above trips. I would love any suggestions that you may have.

In the meantime, I discovered a trip I could take that’s much closer to home, San Francisco in fact. Mind you, I’m not going up there to read McSweeney’s and indulge in the hipster culture. No, I’d be going to dive with great white sharks off the Farallon Islands, located 26 miles off the SF coast. I found a company that charges $775 per person for a one-day cage dive with the monsters.

Every fall, tons of marine life travels to this area to breed and eat one another and you get to enjoy the show—from inside a cage! I can be there to witness a huge white shark devour a 200-300 lb elephant seal. Sounds like fun, no?

  1. I vote for them all. However, I would say avoid Europe right now with hopes that our dollar will get a better exchange rate in the nearer future.

But yes, go for Peru: you can visit the jungle, machu picchu, other incan ruins, colonial cities, beaches, you could also make it over to Bolivia and do a bike ride down “the world’s most dangerous road” and go to an island in the middle of Lake Titicaca where the first inca god was born.

OR, go to South Africa and/or Botswana for a kick-ass safari. P.S. if you choose this option, I am coming with you. Let’s go for New Year’s.

  2. That would be an amazing New Year’s! Let’s look into it!
