Welcome to Doc-cember!

DOC-cember has begun!
This month we’ll be watching some documentaries for ShowShow. In preparation, I’ve already watched a few and here’s a little taste:

american-movie-1shAmerican Movie – I don’t know how I managed to not see this movie until now. What an incredible tale of friendship, booze, drugs, taking advantage of the elderly and, oh yeah, film making. The characters are fascinating and it’s more than worth your time.

time-indefinite-1shTime Indefinite – Feeling depressed? Wondering where life’s twists and turns will take you next? Well, stop it. Watch this documentary that demonstrates the fragility of life and contemplates many other grand and mysterious ways in which this world royally fucks with you. I’m being quite crass – it’s a gorgeous film and it ends beautifully.

my-best-fiendMy Best Fiend Klaus Kinski – If you’re in the mood to watch a sack of crazy talk smack on another pile of loony, then this is the film for you. Holy jeeze are these two guys nuts. What’s more, they are both (well Klaus seemed to be when he was alive) obsessed with one another. It was as if their love/hate relationship was the driving force for their artistic expression. Anyway, it’s really astonishing how far their passion took them.

  1. I’ve seen the first and third of those movies and Katie’s correct, they’re great. American Movie was shorthand for a lot of jokes in high school, including the amazing line, “It’s alright, it’s okay, there’s something to live for… Jesus told me so!”

Like I told Katie, My Best Fiend might be the sort of movie you watch after you’ve seen some of the collaborations between Kinski and Herzog, but it’s fucked enough to be entertaining in its own right. My favorite story involves Herzog and Kinski living in a sort of halfway home for boys and the destruction of a bathroom. Excellent stuff.
